Ethambutol hydrochloride

Description:
Ethambutol hydrochloride is an antitubercular medication primarily used in the treatment of tuberculosis. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is soluble in water and exhibits a pH range of approximately 4.5 to 7.5 in solution. The compound functions by inhibiting the synthesis of the mycobacterial cell wall, thereby preventing the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Ethambutol hydrochloride is typically administered orally and is well-absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Its pharmacokinetics indicate that it has a relatively long half-life, allowing for once-daily dosing in most treatment regimens. Common side effects may include visual disturbances, particularly changes in color perception, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Due to its mechanism of action, it is often used in combination with other antitubercular agents to enhance efficacy and reduce the risk of developing drug resistance. Monitoring of visual acuity is recommended during treatment to mitigate potential adverse effects.
