Description:
Sodium hydroxide, commonly known as caustic soda or lye, is an inorganic compound with the formula NaOH. It is a white, odorless solid that is highly soluble in water, producing a strongly alkaline solution. Sodium hydroxide is hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb moisture from the air, and it is typically encountered in solid form as pellets, flakes, or granules. It has a high melting point and is a strong base, readily dissociating in water to release hydroxide ions (OH⁻), which makes it effective in neutralizing acids. This compound is widely used in various industries, including chemical manufacturing, paper production, and water treatment, as well as in household cleaning products. Due to its caustic nature, sodium hydroxide can cause severe chemical burns and should be handled with care, using appropriate personal protective equipment. It is also important to note that sodium hydroxide reacts exothermically with water, so it should always be added to water, not the other way around, to prevent splattering and potential hazards.
