Description:
Nickel is a transition metal with the chemical symbol Ni and the CAS number 7440-02-0. It is characterized by its silvery-white appearance and is known for its high ductility and malleability. Nickel has a relatively high melting point and boiling point compared to many other metals, making it suitable for high-temperature applications. It exhibits excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in alkaline environments, which is why it is often used in alloys and coatings to enhance durability. Nickel is ferromagnetic at room temperature, which means it can be magnetized. In terms of chemical reactivity, nickel can form various oxidation states, with +2 being the most common in compounds. It readily reacts with acids, releasing hydrogen gas, and can also form complex ions in solution. Nickel is an essential trace element in biological systems, playing a role in certain enzymatic processes, but excessive exposure can be toxic. Its applications range from stainless steel production to batteries and catalysts in chemical reactions.

It is found in many minerals, such as, nickel sulfide, nickel oxide, niccolite, nickeline and pentlandite, among others; it is used in coins and as a component of stainless steel in metallurgy. Nickel is an important reagent in organic chemistry, being used as catalyst for hydrogenation reactions, also in the form of Ni nanoparticles. Additionally, in the form of organic halides such as NiCl2 or NiBr2, it is useful for cyclization reactions with Grignard reagents. Nickel also has antioxidative properties and can be used to remove harmful substances from water.
