CAS:Controlled ProductDisulfiram is an inhibitor of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) and has been used for many years in support of alcoholism treatment by causing acute sensitivity to alcohol. Disulfiram has more recently been found to inhibit the papain-like proteases (PLpros) of human coronaviruses MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-1 and -2. It is suggested that disulfiram acts as an allosteric inhibitor of MERS-CoV protease PLpro and as a competitive inhibitor of SARS-CoV-1/-2 protease PLpro. Disulfiram is currently being investigated as a possible novel therapeutic agent in in the treatment of COVID-19 infection.
