Sulphonamides are compounds that contain a sulphonamide functional group (-SO₂NH₂), where a sulphur atom is bonded to an amino group. They were among the first synthetic antibiotics used in medicine, inhibiting folic acid synthesis in bacteria, which gives them antimicrobial properties.
