Ticagrelor is an effective treatment for acute coronary syndromes, which are the result of a sudden blockage in one of the coronary arteries. Ticagrelor inhibits platelet aggregation and prevents thrombosis by inhibiting the receptor GpIIb/IIIa on platelets. The process is optimized by using malonic acid as a substrate. Biocatalysis is then used to produce acrylic acid, which is then reduced to cyclopropanecarboxylic acid, which can be reacted with trioxide. This reaction produces ticagrelor as a chiral product.
