Anethole is a natural compound that has been shown to have antimicrobial properties. It has been shown to inhibit the production of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in vitro, which are enzymes that break down proteins in the extracellular matrix and can cause tissue damage. Anethole also inhibits the activity of MMP-9, an enzyme found in macrophages that is important for the inflammatory response. The reaction solution with anethole was used as an analytical method for wastewater treatment, where it was found to be more effective than eugenol.
