Beschreibung: 2-Ethylhexanol ist ein verzweigter, aliphatischer Alkohol, der durch seine acht-Kohlenstoff-Struktur gekennzeichnet ist, spezifisch ein Octanol mit einer Hydroxylgruppe (-OH), die am zweiten Kohlenstoff der Kette lokalisiert ist. Es ist eine farblose, viskose Flüssigkeit mit einem milden, angenehmen Geruch. Diese Verbindung ist in organischen Lösungsmitteln löslich, hat jedoch eine begrenzte Löslichkeit in Wasser aufgrund ihrer hydrophoben Alkylkette. 2-Ethylhexanol wird hauptsächlich als Lösungsmittel und als Zwischenprodukt in der Herstellung von Weichmachern, insbesondere Dioctylphthalat, das weit verbreitet in der Herstellung von flexiblen Kunststoffen verwendet wird, eingesetzt. Darüber hinaus dient es als Tensid und ist an der Synthese verschiedener chemischer Produkte beteiligt. Die Substanz hat ein relativ niedriges Toxizitätsprofil, kann jedoch wie viele organische Lösungsmittel Gesundheitsrisiken bei längerer Exposition darstellen, was angemessene Sicherheitsmaßnahmen beim Umgang erforderlich macht. Sein Siedepunkt und Flammpunkt zeigen an, dass es von Wärmequellen und offenen Flammen ferngehalten werden sollte, um Brandgefahren zu vermeiden.
