1-(Bromomethyl)-3-methoxy-5-methylbenzene is a synthetase inhibitor that binds to the active site of the synthetase and inhibits protein synthesis. The binding causes structural changes in the enzyme, which are detected by mass spectrometry. This compound has been shown to be a promiscuous substrate for many aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (ARSs). It is structurally similar to other analogues that have been shown to inhibit ARSs, such as dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. 1-(Bromomethyl)-3-methoxy-5-methylbenzene has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of protein synthesis in cell-free systems and can be used for the quantification of proteins in cell lysates.
