Pentansäure, auch bekannt als Valeriansäure, ist eine gesättigte Fettsäure mit gerader Kette und der chemischen Formel C5H10O2. Sie zeichnet sich durch eine fünf Kohlenstoffatome umfassende Kette mit einer Carbonsäurefunktion (-COOH) an einem Ende aus. Diese Verbindung ist eine farblose Flüssigkeit mit einem stechenden Geruch, der an ranzige Butter oder Käse erinnert. Pentansäure ist in Wasser, Ethanol und Ether löslich, was typisch für kurzkettige Fettsäuren ist.
