Butanthiol, auch bekannt als Butylmercaptan, ist eine organische Verbindung mit der chemischen Formel C4H10S. Es ist eine farblose Flüssigkeit mit einem starken, unangenehmen Geruch, der an faulen Kohl oder Knoblauch erinnert, was es auch in niedrigen Konzentrationen leicht erkennbar macht. Butanthiol wird als Thiol klassifiziert, das durch das Vorhandensein einer Sulfhydrylgruppe (-SH) gekennzeichnet ist, die an einem Butan-Rückgrat befestigt ist. Es ist in organischen Lösungsmitteln löslich und hat eine begrenzte Löslichkeit in Wasser. Die Verbindung ist brennbar und sollte mit Vorsicht behandelt werden, da sie Gesundheitsrisiken durch Inhalation oder Hautkontakt darstellen kann. Sein starker Geruch macht es auch nützlich als Duftstoff für Erdgas, um Lecks zu erkennen.
