Tetrahydrofuran (THF) ist eine farblose, flüchtige Flüssigkeit mit einem charakteristischen etherartigen Geruch. Es ist ein cyclischer Ether und dient als wichtiges Lösungsmittel in der organischen Chemie aufgrund seiner Fähigkeit, eine breite Palette von polaren und unpolaren Verbindungen zu lösen. THF hat einen niedrigen Siedepunkt und einen relativ hohen Dampfdruck, was es in verschiedenen Anwendungen nützlich macht, einschließlich als Lösungsmittel für Polymere und in der Herstellung von Arzneimitteln. Seine chemische Struktur weist einen fünfgliedrigen Ring auf, der vier Kohlenstoffatome und ein Sauerstoffatom enthält, was zu seiner Reaktivität und Fähigkeit beiträgt, an verschiedenen chemischen Reaktionen, wie der Polymerisation, teilzunehmen.
