N,N-Bis(2-ethylhexyl)-2-methylpropanamide is a nitrate that can be used to extract metal ions from aqueous solutions. It has been shown to preferentially bind to copper and nickel ions. This compound is soluble in hexane and insoluble in water. N,N-Bis(2-ethylhexyl)-2-methylpropanamide is a thermally stable amide that can be used as an extractant for metal ions from aqueous solution. The amide forms strong hydrogen bonds with the metal ion and breaks apart when heated or subjected to pressure, releasing the metal ion. The ligand forms an affinity for the metal ion by donating electron density or electrons that stabilize the charge on the metal ion.
