4-[(4-Hydroxyphenyl)methyl]-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one is a sodium carbonate salt that is soluble in water and has a pH of 10. It is used as a pH indicator, with bright yellow coloration at pH 11 and brown coloration at pH 7. When 4-[(4-hydroxyphenyl)methyl]-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one is added to urine samples, the fluorescence detector can be used to measure the concentration of nitrogen atoms in the sample. This compound has been shown to react with fatty acids and other reactive substances, which may be useful for pharmaceutical preparations.
