The compound binds to the enzyme thymidylate synthase, which converts deoxyuridine monophosphate to thymidylate. It also binds to the receptor for 5,6-dihydro-5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine, which is expressed on cells of the immune system. This binding prevents activation of lymphocytes and inhibits cell proliferation.
