5-Methylpyrimidine-2-thiol hydrochloride (5MPT) is an inhibitor of the enzyme α1-acid glycoprotein that is used to treat patients with cirrhosis. It has a low oral bioavailability, so it is administered by intravenous infusion. 5MPT inhibits the synthesis of vitamin K dependent clotting factors II, VII, IX, and X in rat liver microsomes. This drug also has an anticoagulant effect by inhibiting platelet aggregation and preventing thrombus formation. The drug can interact with coumarin derivatives and other drugs that are metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes or have anticoagulant effects. 5MPT has been shown to be carcinogenic in laboratory animals.
