4,6-Dichloropyrimidine is an intermediate in the production of malonic acid. It is also used as a process optimization agent in the synthesis of hydrochloric acid and water vapor. 4,6-Dichloropyrimidine reacts with hydrogen chloride to form a chlorinating agent that can be used for the chlorination of amines and alcohols. The reaction product is hydrochloric acid and dichloropyrimidine. This intermediate can also be used to synthesize amides through a Suzuki coupling reaction with hydroxyl groups, amines, and n-dimethyl formamide.
