Dimethylterephthalat (DMT) ist eine organische Verbindung mit der chemischen Formel C10H10O4, die häufig als Zwischenprodukt in der Herstellung von Polyestern, insbesondere Polyethylenterephthalat (PET), verwendet wird. Es erscheint als farbloser, kristalliner Feststoff mit einem leicht süßlichen Geruch. DMT ist in organischen Lösungsmitteln wie Ethanol und Aceton löslich, hat jedoch eine begrenzte Löslichkeit in Wasser. Die Substanz hat einen Schmelzpunkt, der typischerweise um Raumtemperatur liegt, und einen Siedepunkt, der deutlich höher ist, was auf ihre Stabilität unter normalen Bedingungen hinweist. DMT wird durch die Veresterung von Terephthalsäure mit Methanol hergestellt und kann auch aus erneuerbaren Ressourcen gewonnen werden. This compound is also resistant to oxidation by catalysts such as hydrogen peroxide. The dimethyl terephthalate molecule is made up of two methyl groups (CH3) and two ethyl groups (C2H5) attached to a central carbon atom with four bonds. Dimethyl terephthalate is produced by reacting ethylene glycol with terephthalic acid in an esterification reaction. The addition of a catalyst can lead to an increase in the rate of this reaction. Methyl ethyl terephalate, an ester formed from the reaction between methyl alcohol and terephtalic acid, has been shown to produce high levels of ethanol and CO emissions when heated at high temperatures.
