5-Acetyl-2-methylfuran-3-carboxylic acid is a white solid that is soluble in water. The compound may be prepared by the cyclization of 5-acetylbenzoic acid with thionyl chloride or acetylation of 2,5-dimethoxytetrahydrofuran. It can be used as an intermediate in organic synthesis and as a reagent for the preparation of esters and chlorides. In addition, magnesium perchlorate reacts with 5-acetyl-2-methylfuran-3 carboxylic acid to give the corresponding magnesium salt.
