(Valacyclovir) is an antiviral prodrug, which is synthesized from acyclovir. It serves as a more efficiently absorbed and potent precursor to acyclovir, enhancing its bioavailability. Valacyclovir undergoes hepatic metabolism, where it is rapidly converted by valacyclovir hydrolase to the active compound, acyclovir. Acyclovir then inhibits viral DNA polymerase by competitively substituting for deoxyguanosine triphosphate, leading to chain termination during viral DNA replication.
