It is used in treatment of menopausal syndrome.

CAS:Kontrolliertes Produkt5b-Androstan-3,17-dione is a steroid that has been used as a contraceptive and to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy. It is a metabolite of testosterone and can be found in the urine of pregnant women. 5b-Androstan-3,17-dione binds to the glucocorticoid receptor, which is involved in regulating many physiological processes including inflammation. The binding of 5b-androstan-3,17-dione to the glucocorticoid receptor prevents the binding of other steroid hormones such as cortisol or estradiol benzoate. This agent inhibits the production of enzymes that are involved in lipid synthesis, leading to decreased levels of cholesterol and fatty acids. 5b-Androstan-3,17-dione binds strongly to proteins containing hydroxyl groups, which may account for its high affinity for tissue culture cell lines.
