Beschreibung:
Dekan ist ein gerade kettenförmiges Alkan mit der chemischen Formel C10H22, das durch seine zehn Kohlenstoffatome und die entsprechenden Wasserstoffatome gekennzeichnet ist. Es ist bei Raumtemperatur eine farb- und geruchlose Flüssigkeit und gehört zur größeren Familie der Kohlenwasserstoffe. Dekan ist in Wasser unlöslich, aber in organischen Lösungsmitteln löslich, was es zu einer unpolaren Substanz macht. Sein Siedepunkt ist im Vergleich zu kleineren Alkanen relativ hoch, was seine größere Molekülgröße und die erhöhten van-der-Waals-Kräfte widerspiegelt. Dekan kommt häufig im Erdöl vor und wird als Referenzkohlenwasserstoff in verschiedenen chemischen Analysen verwendet. Es dient als Lösungsmittel und wird auch in der Produktion anderer Chemikalien eingesetzt. Darüber hinaus kann Dekan an Verbrennungsreaktionen beteiligt sein, bei denen Kohlendioxid und Wasser entstehen, was in Energieanwendungen von Bedeutung ist. Aufgrund seiner relativ geringen Toxizität wird Dekan oft als sicherer angesehen als viele andere organische Lösungsmittel, obwohl eine ordnungsgemäße Handhabung und Sicherheitsmaßnahmen weiterhin unerlässlich sind.

It is miscible in water and benzene, but slightly soluble in ether and other non-polar solvents. Decane is not flammable, but it does undergo self-ignition when heated to a high temperature. The kinetic energy of decane may be due to its intermolecular hydrogen bonding or its laminar transport properties. Decane can undergo transfer reactions with water vapor and fatty acids, which can lead to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as peroxides.
