2,3-O-Isopropylidene-L-ribofuranose is a chiral building block for the synthesis of α-amino acids. This compound can be obtained from l-arabinose and l-rhamnose by kinetic resolution reactions with reagents such as (R)-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydrobenzo[b]thiophene or (S)-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydrobenzo[b]thiophene. The product is an enantiospecifically pure mixture of 2,3-O-isopropylidene L-ribofuranose and its antipode. The use of acid catalysts such as sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid will yield a higher yield of the desired product.
