[(Thiolan-2-yl)methyl]thiourea (TMTU) is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria. TMTU binds to bacterial proteins and blocks the synthesis of proteins, which leads to cell death. This agent has been shown to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Enterococcus faecalis. It also reduces the production of proinflammatory cytokines in human cells. The binding site of TMTU is not yet known; however, this agent has been shown to bind with high affinity to ribosomes from human cells.
