2-(3,4,5-Trihydroxyphenyl)chromen-4-one (2HPP) is an effective drug that can be used to induce apoptotic cell death. 2HPP has potent anti-inflammatory activities and neurotrophic effects. It also has neuroprotective properties and can be used to inhibit the growth of intestinal bacteria. 2HPP can inhibit autophagy and induce apoptosis in hippocampal neurons. This drug is synthesized by reacting 3,4,5-trihydroxyphenylacetic acid with sodium sulfide in aqueous ammonia solution in the presence of hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide. It is then purified by recrystallization from water or ethanol.
