Mupirocin ist ein topisches Antibiotikum, das hauptsächlich zur Behandlung von Hautinfektionen eingesetzt wird, die durch bestimmte Bakterien verursacht werden, insbesondere Staphylococcus aureus, einschließlich methicillinresistenter Stämme (MRSA). Es wird aus der Fermentation des Bakteriums Pseudomonas fluorescens gewonnen. Mupirocin wirkt, indem es die bakterielle Proteinsynthese hemmt, indem es an die Isoleucyl-tRNA-Synthetase bindet, was die Einbindung von Isoleucin in Proteine stört und letztendlich zum Absterben der Bakterienzellen führt. Der Stoff ist typischerweise in Form von Salbe oder Creme erhältlich und wird direkt auf die betroffene Stelle aufgetragen.
