Sodium picosulfate monohydrate is a bowel cleanser that is used to treat constipation or other bowel disorders. It is a crystalline cellulose product that contains sodium and p-hydroxybenzoic acid. It has been shown to be effective in geriatric patients, who were given the drug for up to two weeks. Sodium picosulfate monohydrate has also been shown to be safe and effective for use as bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy in an intent-to-treat population of adults. Sodium picosulfate monohydrate has been shown to have chemical stability for up to one year at room temperature when stored in a dry place and does not require refrigeration. The product is not absorbed into the blood stream and does not cause any adverse effects.
