Beschreibung:
Magnesiumoxid (MgO) ist eine anorganische Verbindung, die durch ihr weißes, pudriges Aussehen und ihren hohen Schmelzpunkt gekennzeichnet ist. Sie entsteht durch die Reaktion von Magnesium mit Sauerstoff und kommt in der Natur häufig als Mineral Periklas vor. Magnesiumoxid ist bekannt für seine hervorragende thermische Stabilität und ist ein guter elektrischer Isolator. Es hat einen hohen Schmelzpunkt, was es für Hochtemperaturanwendungen geeignet macht, wie z.B. feuerfeste Materialien in Öfen. Chemisch gesehen ist es ein basisches Oxid und reagiert mit Säuren, um Magnesiumsalze zu bilden. In Bezug auf die Löslichkeit ist MgO wenig löslich in Wasser, kann jedoch mit Säuren reagieren, um lösliche Magnesiumsalze zu erzeugen. Seine Anwendungen sind vielfältig und reichen von der Verwendung in Baumaterialien, Landwirtschaft als Bodenverbesserer, bis hin zu seiner Rolle in der Produktion von Magnesiummetall. Darüber hinaus wird Magnesiumoxid in der Pharmaindustrie wegen seiner antazidischen Eigenschaften und als Nahrungsergänzungsmittel für Magnesium verwendet.
