The synthesis of 4,4,4-trichloro-3-hydroxybutanoic acid involves the reaction of benzyl alcohol with trichloromethyl chloride in the presence of an acid catalyst. The latter can be converted to its antipode by hydrogenation or by heating with sodium methoxide in methanol.
