Fedotozine tartrate is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed in vivo to its active form, difenoxine. It is effective against acid-related diseases, including reflux esophagitis and gastric ileus. Fedotozine tartrate inhibits the activity of pepsin, which is an enzyme that breaks down proteins into peptides and amino acids in the stomach. This inhibition results in decreased acid production by the stomach, reduced refluxing, and decreased incidence of ulcers. Fedotozine tartrate has been found to be therapeutically effective for the treatment of ileus.
