Nitrilotriessigsäure (NTA) ist ein Chelatbildner mit der chemischen Formel C6H9N3O6. Er zeichnet sich durch seine Fähigkeit aus, stabile Komplexe mit Metallionen zu bilden, was ihn in verschiedenen Anwendungen nützlich macht, einschließlich der Wasseraufbereitung, der Landwirtschaft und als Bestandteil in Reinigungsmitteln. NTA ist ein farbloser, kristalliner Feststoff, der in Wasser löslich ist, und zeigt ein pH-abhängiges Verhalten, wobei seine Chelatfähigkeit unter alkalischen Bedingungen am effektivsten ist. Die Anwesenheit von drei Carbonsäuregruppen ermöglicht es ihm, effektiv an divalente und trivalente Metallionen wie Calcium, Magnesium und Eisen zu binden. NTA wird oft als umweltfreundlichere Alternative zu anderen Chelatbildnern wie EDTA angesehen, da es unter bestimmten Bedingungen biologisch abbaubar ist. Allerdings hat seine Verwendung Umweltbedenken aufgeworfen, da es das Potenzial hat, Schwermetalle in Böden und Wassersystemen zu mobilisieren.
