Oxandrolone is a synthetic androgen that is used to treat HIV infection in children, as well as other conditions. Oxandrolone binds to the androgen receptor, which can lead to an increase in muscle mass. It also has been shown to reduce the symptoms of HIV infection, including weight loss and neuropathy, in adults with AIDS. Oxandrolone is not recommended for use with active antiretroviral therapy because it has been shown to affect levels of liver enzymes. This drug may be prescribed for treating hepatitis caused by hepatic lipase or for reducing cortisol concentrations in patients with Cushing's syndrome. The effects of oxandrolone are dose-dependent; higher doses will have more significant effects on muscle growth and fat reduction than lower doses.
