Natriumcyanid (NaCN) ist eine hochgiftige, weiße kristalline Verbindung, die hauptsächlich im Bergbau verwendet wird, insbesondere bei der Gewinnung von Gold und Silber durch den Cyanidierungsprozess. Es ist in Wasser löslich und bildet eine stark alkalische Lösung und hat einen bitteren Mandelgeruch aufgrund der Freisetzung von Wasserstoffcyanid, wenn es mit Säuren in Kontakt kommt. Natriumcyanid wird als hochgefährliche Substanz eingestuft, da es die Zellatmung hemmt, indem es an Cytochrom c Oxidase in den Mitochondrien bindet, was bei Exposition zu potenziell tödlichen Folgen führen kann.
