L-Gulurono-6,3-lactone is a methylated carbohydrate that can be modified with a variety of functional groups. It is used in the synthesis of saccharides and oligosaccharides. L-Gulurono-6,3-lactone has been shown to bind to a variety of proteins, including amyloid beta protein and human serum albumin.
This compound is synthesized by reacting L-glucose with 2 equivalents of anhydrous hydrogen fluoride in acetic acid at room temperature. It is also fluorinated by reacting it with sodium borohydride and hydrogen fluoride in methanol at -78°C.
