Gamithromycin ist ein Makrolid-Antibiotikum, das hauptsächlich in der Tiermedizin eingesetzt wird, insbesondere zur Behandlung von Atemwegsinfektionen bei Nutzvieh. Es zeichnet sich durch seine antibakterielle Wirkung mit breitem Spektrum aus, die eine Vielzahl von grampositiven und einigen gramnegativen Bakterien angreift. Gamithromycin wirkt, indem es die bakterielle Proteinsynthese hemmt, indem es an die 50S-ribosomale Untereinheit bindet, wodurch das Wachstum und die Fortpflanzung von Bakterien effektiv gestört werden. Die Verbindung ist bekannt für ihre lange Halbwertszeit, die eine weniger häufige Dosierung im Vergleich zu anderen Antibiotika ermöglicht.
