Alternaria alternata is a fungus that produces a variety of toxins, including the AAL toxin TC2. This toxin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. It also has been shown to inhibit the production of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and serum enzymes, such as dismutase activity, in mice with lung cancer. Alternaria alternata is found on plants and soil and can cause allergies in humans.
