This compound is an antioxidant that inhibits lipid peroxidation in vitro. It also exhibits an inhibitory effect on the enzyme activity of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase. 3-(3',4'-Dimethoxyphenyl)propanoic acid is metabolized to form both reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). ROS are electron donors while RNS are electron acceptors, which leads to oxidation products.
