Ipratropiumbromid ist eine synthetische quartäre Ammoniumverbindung, die hauptsächlich als Bronchodilatator zur Behandlung von Atemwegserkrankungen wie Asthma und chronisch obstruktiver Lungenerkrankung (COPD) eingesetzt wird. Es wirkt als anticholinergisches Mittel, indem es die Wirkung von Acetylcholin auf muskarinische Rezeptoren in den Atemwegen hemmt, was zu einer Entspannung der bronchialen glatten Muskulatur und einer Verbesserung des Luftstroms führt. Die Substanz erscheint als weißes bis off-white kristallines Pulver und ist in Wasser löslich, was sie für Inhalationsformulierungen geeignet macht.
