Monensin-Natrium ist ein Polyether-Ionophor-Antibiotikum, das hauptsächlich als Futtermittelzusatz in der Tierhaltung verwendet wird, um das Wachstum und die Futtereffizienz zu verbessern. Es wird durch die Fermentation des Bakteriums *Streptomyces cinnamonensis* hergestellt. Diese Verbindung weist eine komplexe Struktur auf, die durch ein zyklisches Polyether-Rückgrat gekennzeichnet ist, das es ihr ermöglicht, monovalente Kationen wie Natrium und Kalium durch biologische Membranen zu transportieren.
