It is a potent inhibitor of fatty acid biosynthesis and has been shown to be effective against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria. cis-Propenylphosphonic acid reacts with phosphotungstic acid, which binds to the carboxylic acid group of the bacterial cell membrane, thereby inhibiting fatty acid synthesis.
