Applications Aquavan, more commonly known as Fospropofol Disodium, is a sedative/ hypnotic drug and a water-soluble prodrug of Propofol (P829750). Studies show that Fospropofol Disodium can have a protective effect on rat liver against ischemia-reperfusion injury.

CAS:Kontrolliertes ProduktFospropofol is a general anaesthetic drug used in the treatment of insomnia, agitation and anxiety. It is also used as an adjunct to anesthesia for certain procedures such as colonoscopy or gastroscopy. Fospropofol binds to voltage-gated potassium channels, increasing the duration of potassium channel opening, which leads to hyperpolarization of neurons and inhibition of neuronal firing. This inhibition leads to sedation and muscle relaxation. Fospropofol also binds with high affinity to GABA receptors, leading to increased chloride flux into neurons and hyperpolarization. This results in reduced levels of acetylcholine at synapses, which induces sleepiness. The binding affinity for GABA receptors is much higher than that for voltage-gated potassium channels, so it is thought that GABA receptor binding may be responsible for the sedative effects seen with fospropofol administration.
