It can be synthesized by reacting phosphorus oxychloride and vanadium chlorides with molybdenum or by reacting a primary amine with an enamine, followed by hydrolyzing the resulting acetal. This compound can also be made from lactams using molecular oxygen and catalytic amounts of acetals and dimethylformamide.
