    Sodium difluoromethanesulfinate (SFMS) is a fluorinated organosulfur compound that has been studied as a potential replacement for ozone-depleting substances. SFMS is produced by the reaction of hydrogen sulfide and chlorofluorocarbons, which yields SFMS and hydrochloric acid. The reaction system is designed to produce an efficient method for preparing SFMS with high yield in the presence of oxygen. This compound reacts with functional groups and forms alkylation products such as methylsulfonyl chloride, methylsulfonyl fluoride, carbonyls, methides, and other compounds. These reactions are important for obtaining a number of organic compounds that are used in pharmaceuticals and chemical industries. SFMS is also an effective alkylating agent for cancer cells.
