It has been found to inhibit the growth of viruses in vitro by binding to the viral DNA and inhibiting viral RNA synthesis. N2,9-Diacetylguanine is also a substrate for acetylation and may undergo this reaction with acetyl coenzyme A to form N4,9-diacetylguanine. The acetylated form of guanine inhibits the virus by blocking its ability to replicate DNA.
