2,3:4,5-Di-O-isopropylidene-D-xylitol is an acceptor for the Stannic Chloride Reaction. It is a lacto-n-biose derivative of D-xylitol that has been shown to have antibiotic activity against Streptococcus section A and B. The temporary protection of the hydroxyl group in 2,3:4,5diOisopropylidene-Dxylitol with methyl glycosides provides a convenient method for glycosylations. The chloride ion can be replaced by hexaacetate to yield 1amino1deoxyDxylitol hydrochloride, which is a benzyl derivative. This reaction allows for research into the transfer of 2,3:4,5diOisopropylideneDxylitol.
