D-Norleucine is a non-protein amino acid that is an important part of the synthesis of proteins. It has been shown to be a competitive inhibitor of the racemase enzyme, which converts D-alanine to L-alanine. The target cell for this reaction is unknown, but it may be related to the protein synthesis process. D-Norleucine has also been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium avium and other acid-fast bacteria by interfering with the production of ATP and incorporation into cellular structures.
