Tobramycin ist ein Aminoglykosid-Antibiotikum, das hauptsächlich zur Behandlung von Infektionen eingesetzt wird, die durch gramnegative Bakterien, insbesondere Pseudomonas aeruginosa, verursacht werden. Es ist wirksam gegen eine Vielzahl von bakteriellen Infektionen, insbesondere bei Patienten mit Mukoviszidose oder solchen mit geschwächtem Immunsystem. Die Substanz zeichnet sich durch ihre Fähigkeit aus, die bakterielle Proteinsynthese zu hemmen, indem sie an die 30S-ribosomale Untereinheit bindet, was zu einer fehlerhaften Ablesung der mRNA und letztendlich zum Zelltod führt. Tobramycin wird typischerweise durch Inhalation, Injektion oder topische Anwendung verabreicht, abhängig von der Lage und Schwere der Infektion.
