It can also be used as a hydrogenation reduction agent in the α subunit of methyl esterification, which is an important step in the biosynthesis of fatty acids. 5-Bromo-2-methylpyridine has clinical relevance due to its efficient preparative high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method and low cost. The compound exists in two isomeric forms; however, only one form has been described so far.
