3-(2-Chloroacetyl)-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one is used as a chiral, transition, synthetic reagent for the asymmetric synthesis of β-lactam antibiotics. It is used in aldol condensation reactions with an α,β-unsaturated ketone to produce the corresponding β-lactam. 3-(2-Chloroacetyl)-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one has also been shown to be an effective antibiotic against gram negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella enterica.
