Beschreibung:
Formaldehyd, mit der CAS-Nummer 50-00-0, ist ein farbloses, brennbares Gas bei Raumtemperatur, das durch seinen starken, stechenden Geruch gekennzeichnet ist. Es ist das einfachste Aldehyd, mit der chemischen Formel CH₂O. Formaldehyd ist hochgradig wasserlöslich und bildet eine Lösung, die als Formalin bekannt ist, das typischerweise etwa 37 % Formaldehyd nach Gewicht enthält. Diese Verbindung wird in verschiedenen Industrien weit verbreitet eingesetzt, unter anderem als Konservierungsmittel in biologischen Laboren, in der Herstellung von Harzen und Kunststoffen sowie als Desinfektionsmittel. Formaldehyd ist bekannt für seine Reaktivität, insbesondere in Polymerisations- und Kondensationsreaktionen, was es in der synthetischen Chemie wertvoll macht. Es wird jedoch auch als potenzielle Gesundheitsgefahr anerkannt; die Exposition kann Reizungen der Augen, der Haut und des Atmungssystems verursachen, und es wird als wahrscheinliches menschliches Karzinogen eingestuft.
